Patrick Cantrill

Patrick holds a law degree from University College, London. He was admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales in 1984 and in Hong Kong in 1986. His practice covers all aspects of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property law – a field in which he has specialised for virtually his entire career.

In 1992, Patrick was headhunted to join Walker Morris from a partnership in a City of London firm with the brief to establish and head up the Intellectual Property Group. Under Patrick, the Group has grown from a standing start to having now 11 specialist lawyers – many of whom have science backgrounds up to post doctorate level.

He has held a number of posts within intellectual property based organisations. For example, he is a past chairman of the Parallel Imports Committee of the International Trademark Association, the USA based major brand owners forum. He has also served as the Chairman of the North East Chapter of the Licensing Executives Society, the international technology transfer group. He has published articles extensively on intellectual property and is frequently called upon to lecture on the subject in both the UK and overseas, most notably in recent years in China.

Patrick is recognised as a leader in his field and since creating the IP department has been involved extensively in advising and assisting companies, universities and other bodies on a wide range of matters relating to the identification, exploitation and enforcement of intellectual property. He has substantial experience of handling and coordinating infringement and/or revocation actions and being involved in multijurisdictional and cross border litigation and has several High Court and Court of Appeal successes to his name.

In recent editions of Chambers – A Guide To The UK Legal Profession, the Intellectual Property Group at Walker Morris was described as having “an amazingly accurate instinct for the way a case will go,” and describes Patrick Cantrill as “one of the individuals you give your heavy-duty work to” .
