Tom Peel
Partner - Construction
Tom qualified in 1997 after completing his training at Walker Morris and became a partner in 2004. Tom has specialised in all aspects of construction work since qualification.
On the non contentious side, Tom predominantly acts for developers in both the public and private sector in the negotiation of construction contracts, including building contracts, professional appointments, warranties, bonds and guarantees. Tom also advises a number of Banks on the construction aspects involved in financing new developments, as well as purchasers and tenants of new developments.
With regard to contentious matters, Tom advises on all aspect of dispute resolution ranging from High Court proceedings, Arbitration, Mediation to Adjudication. His work includes:
- leading the team advising Unite on the successful defence of proceedings brought by P4, a case which has subsequently been reported
- advising a national developer in its defence of a multi million pound adjudication, which resulted in the entire claim being dismissed
- acting for a specialist mechanical contractor in arbitration proceedings relating to the negligent design of a vaccum packaging plant at a food production facility
- advising the former directors of an abattoir in a multi million pound claim against their architect for negligent design.
In Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession 2009, Tom is named as ‘Up and Coming’ amongst the Leading Individual construction lawyers in Yorkshire. The Guide quotes his clients describing him as “he fits directly into that no-nonsense, pragmatic Walker Morris mould.”
