Walker Morris secures planning permission for Crosslane Student Developments

Planning specialists from Walker Morris have successfully secured planning permission for Crosslane Student Developments’ new 117 bed student accommodation development on Woodhouse Square in Leeds.

Construction has already commenced on the purpose-built student accommodation project, with a gross development value of approximately £15 million, and is expected to be completed in September 2018, in time for the start of the 2018/19 academic year. Once completed, the development will comprise five storeys of high-quality residential accommodation with 117 luxury en-suite self-contained studio apartments ranging from 20sqm to 38sqm. The property is Crosslane’s first development in Leeds and its second in Yorkshire, following the successful construction of Brass Founders in Sheffield.

Crosslane has a large property portfolio of purpose-built student accommodation assets across Europe, comprising over 3,100 beds.

Head of Planning Consultancy from the firm’s Planning & Environment Team, acted as consultancy lead and provided planning advice to Crosslane from the scheme’s inception. He commented:

“We are delighted to have been able to secure planning permission for Crosslane Student Developments for its newest development at Woodhouse Square. This was an especially challenging site in planning, social and heritage terms and in one of the City’s famous Georgian squares. A bespoke, co-ordinated and sophisticated approach was needed and it was pleasing that the Planning Authority ultimately endorsed our conclusion that Crosslane’s scheme would enhance the character and appearance of the Square and Conservation Area.

Leeds is one of the largest student cities in the UK and the Woodhouse Square development will provide Leeds’ student population with premium, purpose-built accommodation in an accessible central location.”

Robert Goulsbra, Development Manager at Crosslane said:

“We are pleased to commence construction at Woodhouse Square, our first development in Leeds, helping to meet the strong growth in demand for this type of student accommodation. Crosslane has invested significantly in Yorkshire, and by delivering Woodhouse Square, Crosslane will have developed a total of 554 beds in the region.

“Crosslane has a successful track record of developing high quality student accommodation, working in close partnership with local planning committees to ensure we deliver schemes for the long term, in a responsible and reliable manner, for the benefit of our customers and the surrounding neighbourhoods.”

The Walker Morris Planning Team is recognised nationally by the independent guides to the legal profession being ranked in Tier 1 by both Legal 500 and Chambers and is also ranked as a ‘National Leader outside London’ by Chambers.
